My First Veggies
August 29, 2009
I’m so proud and excited. I’ve wanted to learn to grow my own veggies for a while now but I never knew where to start. So.. I did what I always do and just jumped right in. I mean.. I know the basics; you need some dirt and you need some plants. Right? Just put the plants in the dirt? Sure!
Hehe.. anyway, here they are. I planted the tomato seedling while my boyfriend did the parsley.
Unfortunately, we don’t actually have a clue what we’re doing and didn’t really think about spacing properly (mostly because Jasmine was tired and crying while we were at Bunnings) so we have some left over seedlings. Maybe this means another trip to pick up some more containers.
I don’t mind learning this way – it’s all still fun. Next week, I’m hoping to get some lettuce and just keep adding vegetables as we go. There were so many to choose from that I was getting really excited and wanted to get them all, but we have limited space to work with so this will do for now.
These are the seedlings we bought:

This is our parsley:

And this is our first lot of tomatos:

very exciting Romi, and i like the growing “thing” (sorry can’t think of the word) for your tomatoes I should try and construct something like that for ours this year.

Thanks!
I forget what it’s called too, but we picked it up from Bunning’s and as the plant grows, you just add the next post and ring.
A tip I was given from a friend was to tie the tomato to the stake using something soft and flexible like a bit of old stocking, because the tomato plant sways in the wind and twist ties can damage it.
Another tip I was given was that you can either use cheap plastic containers from a $2 store (with holes in the bottom for drainage) or you can use polystyrene boxes (and paint them or cover with hessian sacks and paint if you care about looks) and it’s a much more affordable option
My boyfriend chose the containers we had (hey.. he’s paying.. he can pick any fancy ones he wants, lol) and they have little troughs for the water to be stored in the bottom and get soaked up. It holds quite a heap which should be perfect for Aussie summers. I’m sure you could make something like this yourself though.

What a great start Romi – if you are still in Bris next year we could put our heads together and share some seeds. I have no idea about gardening in Brisbane, but I am sure that I will learn:) Good luck. The polystyrene boxes is a great idea – we grew our tomatoes in the when we lived in Darwin and we had about 4kg of tomaotes off of them:)
